This congregation was founded in 1891, in Byron Street, though there is mention of a Polisher minyan in Leeds some 15 years earlier. In 1893 it was sufficiently well established to advertise for chazzan/shochet at an annual salary of 100. In 1904 it had 95 seatholders and the Reader was Rev. Mark Cohen with Mr. R. Pyzer as President. By 1930 the reader was Rev. A. Fass, and three years later it moved into the Louis Street premises vacated by the New Leeds Congregation. In 1949 the membership had increased to 200 and by 1954 the minister was Rev. L. Saffer who later acquired semicha and, in 1941, an M.A. degree at Leeds University. The President was Harry Reuben. In July 1966 the synagogue suffered a fire which put it out of action for several months. The New Synagogue was able to provide seats for its 130 members for the High Festivals that year. Due to a declining membership, it closed when it merged in 1974 with UHC.
